What is a D.O. and other common questions
What is a D.O.?
A Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) is a fully licensed physician with advanced training in the body’s interconnected systems. D.O.s treat with the same medical authority as M.D.s—but with a deeper focus on whole-person healing. They understand how structure influences function, and how subtle imbalances can ripple into chronic issues. This is medicine that listens, observes, and treats with intention.
What is OMM?
Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM) is a hands-on therapeutic approach used by D.O.s to restore alignment, ease tension, and support the body’s natural healing intelligence. It’s physician-guided, medically grounded, and deeply attuned to the body’s rhythms. Each session is tailored, precise, and transformative.
What is Integrative Medicine?
Integrative medicine is a healthcare approach that brings together conventional medical treatments and evidence-based complementary and alternative therapies. The goal is to address the full spectrum of a patient’s health - physical, emotional, and social—while supporting individual priorities. Physicians practicing integrative medicine consider a wide range of options, from lifestyle modifications to medications, and work collaboratively with patients to create personalized plans. This approach encourages active participation in health decisions and aims to promote long-term wellness through tailored, practical strategies.

What To Expect
Initial consultations start with an in-depth interview regarding your current concern to be addressed, past medical history, and current health goals. Most consultations will include an Osteopathic Structural Exam and other physical exam procedures that are pertinent to your care. If OMM is deemed safe and appropriate, a treatment will be provided at the initial consultation. In some cases x-rays or other tests are needed before it is safe to proceed with OMM. If that is the case, Dr. Genewick will order tests and review them with you at your next appointment. Most patients remain fully clothed for the physical exam and Osteopathic treatment. It is best to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing to allow for full range of motion in all joints. Dr. Genewick will provide gowns or shorts if clothing is interferring with the exam or treatment.
Not all conditions are able to be resolved with OMM. If you are not getting meaningful improvements in your condition within 2-3 visits, she will work with you to develop the best next steps for reaching your health and wellness goals. Dr. Genewick will discuss the expected course of treatment after she has completed your history and Osteopathic Physical Exam.
